The most significant benefit of new technology is the time it saves. Tasks that previously required hours of manpower are now being streamlined and simplified by programs designed to think and calculate, allowing real people to focus on tasks only real people can perform. 

Booking a freight load used to involve hours on the phone, sending emails, and updating manual load boards. Not only was it time-consuming, but it was also highly susceptible to human error. As technology has evolved, it’s allowed us to save time and resources in a few specific areas.

A few key ways AI  has begun to assist the freight brokerage industry are:

Trucking industry-specific software can now match loads with suitable carriers by considering numerous variables:

• Equipment type 
• Preferred routes (lanes)
• Rates 

This eliminates the need for manual searching and drastically reduces the costly problem of trucks forced to deadhead (travel empty).

2. Automated Back-Office Tasks

Data entry, document processing, and quote generation that used to take hours have now become streamlined through automation. 

Not only does this reduce office costs, but it also can free up attention to focus on moving even more freight without the need for a larger team, thereby increasing profit margins and controlling costs more effectively.

3. Predictive Analytics

There is a greater ability than ever to predict demand fluctuations, market trends, and even upcoming maintenance needs through simple analysis of both current and historical data. Technology makes it easier than ever to compile, analyze, and plan for variables.

Another advantage of advanced technology is the real-time visibility it provides for all concerned parties.

The days of lost loads and unknown shipping delays are starting to disappear thanks to:

1. Advanced Telematics and Internet of Things (IoT): These systems provide real-time data on location, fuel consumption, cargo conditions, and driver behaviour to make adjustments as needed.
2. Digital Freight Marketplace: Transportation management systems (TMS) mean that the days of calling the dispatcher for updates are a thing of the past. The truck can now be viewed in real-time on an app or web portal by authorized users.
3. Blockchain Integration: Security and transparency are the safeguards against fraud and documentation disputes. Secure, tamper-proof digital ledgers for all contracts, transactions and shipments help all involved parties keep private what needs to be private, and share what needs to be shared.

Smarter Trucks, Safer Roads

The vehicles themselves are also benefiting from rapidly evolving technology, resulting in reduced costs and increased safety.

1. Predictive Maintenance: Previously, the diesel mechanic was only called to fix a breakdown. New telematics technology enables data, such as engine health, mileage, and usage patterns, to predict any servicing a truck needs well before a costly failure occurs, saving both time and money.
2. Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous Features: Safety features such as automatic braking, lane-keeping assist, and radar/collision-avoidance systems are now standard in newer units, enhancing safety and reducing driver fatigue. This makes the trucking industry safer than ever and lowers insurance costs.
3. Alternative Fuels/“Green Logistics”: Technology now plays a crucial role in route optimization, enabling trucks to consume less fuel and emit fewer emissions while still completing the job in the most efficient timeframe possible.

Emergent AI has significantly streamlined the process of shipping specialized freight.

LTL Services: Real-Life Tetris

When it comes to LTL (less-than-truckload) freight, a broker is trying to combine multiple smaller shipments into a load for a single truck to maximize trailer capacity and (ideally) reduce costs.  

New tech can help in a couple of ways:

1. Advanced Load Planning: Specialized programs analyze the size, weight, and destination of each pallet to optimize trailer capacity and stop sequences, resulting in faster deliveries and lower costs. 
2. Warehouse Automation: Companies use robotics and automated sorting systems to expedite shipment processing and transit times, while keeping error rates low. 

Flatbed Services: Precision and Compliance

On the flatbed side of the industry, oversized or unique truck parts and machinery benefit from extra compliance and safety features.

1. Digital Documentation: Electronic generation has expanded into every area, including compliance systems, permits, and Bills of Lading. Paperwork is simplified or eliminated, and the risk of high-cost delays and/or fines is reduced.
2. Digital Freight Matching: When a broker utilizes digital matching technology to quickly find the best carriers for specialized equipment, it streamlines the process and makes it more efficient.
